While many of the faces have changed, they are still the same friendly bunch of archers enjoying and promoting their sport together. Without a doubt, they will welcome you with the same warm enthusiasm new members enjoyed in 1954.
Text Box: Flood City Bowmen has changed and grown over the years. The first compound bows, bow sights, and mechanical release aids all made waves among the instinctive/traditional crowd. 3D came along, and all of the sudden, field archers had to make room in the woods on Sundays for foam shooters. Still, as archery has evolved, so has FCB. Opportunities for varied archery events has increased, and FCB continues to offer something for every archer.
Text Box: The present main building was erected in 1961. Additions were made in 1965—the garage—and in 1983—the 24’x26’ building on the front. In 2004, a metal roof was added, and the tradition of maintaining quality facilities continues. The building has now served several generations of FCB members, allowing one of the finest indoor archery leagues in the state to thrive year after year. The outdoor target range had several buildings come and go, but it was the initial explosion of 3D archery during the early 1990s that saw the construction of the current snack stand, shed, and pavilion.
Text Box: Before 3D archery, field was the hunter’s preferred practice round. Of course, any archer has always been welcome to participate in all archery events, and just like indoor leagues, field rounds were shot by entire families—and still are today. At some point in the late 1950s some crazy club member thought it would be a good idea to shoot the field course at night! And it was apparently a great idea, because FCB’s Nite Owl league remains hugely popular today. Lights were arranged along a portion of the field course, allowing a 15 target (300) field round to be shot at night!
Text Box: Flood City Bowmen was founded as an archery club in June 1954. Early indoor shoots were held at the Cloverleaf Sports Center in Geistown. Initial focus was indoor target archery, which remains one of the most popular FCB events to this day. Soon FCB members saw the need for an outdoor range, which would permit the club to offer outdoor target and field archery events.
Text Box: Suitable land was found in Richland Township, along Fulmer Road. FCB leased the former 40 acre farm property until the owner granted an opportunity to purchase the land in 1957. Club members voted to borrow the necessary funds and FCB officially had a home. The property seemed tailor made for archery events. A large field for outdoor target shooting to distances of 80 yards, surrounded by wooded, hilly terrain typical of western Pennsylvania, perfect for field archery and later, 3D.
